Bridge Load Posting with IoT Sensors

Infrastructure

A Bridge Weigh-in Motion System

There are 178 million trips taken across the U.S.'s 46,000 structurally deficient bridges every day. Due to concerns over their actual load-carrying capacity, some of these bridges have posted weight and speed restrictions. A great number of these structures are in rural locations, away from permanent weighing stations. The lack of enforcement of these load postings presents risks for human lives and costly failures.

Challenge

Majority of rural bridges are away from weighing stations, making enforcement difficult for load posted bridges.

Solution

A low-cost, portable, and reliable BWIM technology can be used to identify over-weight vehicles passing load posted bridges.

Vehicle Tracking and Axle Detection

Using deep learning and computer vision our BWIM system monitors the traffic from CCTV footage and identifies axle locations for heavy trucks.

Low cost, robust

Bridge Load Posting

A novel accelerometer-based sensing method for deformation measurements combined with a robust contactless axle detection system using laser range finders and cameras.

Low Cost Technology

The installation cost is significantly less than traditional WIM technologies.

Less Maintenance

Sensors are not exposed to traffic loading, requires almost no maintenance.

Novel Approach

A new method of bridge weigh-in-motion using high-precision accelerometers

Easy Installation

The sensors are easily attached onto the surface of bridge near the abutments.

Robust Contactless System

Highly portable, non-contact solution using solar-powered wireless sensors.

Traffic Monitoring

An advanced machine vision system monitors traffic in-real time for axle detection.

To safeguard America's bridges, BWIM offers a promising solution. Using our low-cost, portable system, we are able to enforce weight restrictions for highway bridges even in rural locations.
