Smart Traffic Signs for CAVs

Smart Traffic Signs for CAVs
The technology reduces the need for roadside infrastructure (i.e., roadside units - RSU), in areas where wireless communication is not practical such as rural areas. When a CAV equipped with the Connected Wise’s machine vision system sees a smart traffic sign, it will match the sign identifier with an Infrastructure-to-Vehicle (I2V) message from the preinstalled library. Since the message library is periodically updated from a nearby RSU, CAVs will receive the updated messages without needing to replace the physical signs.
The machine vision system uses a state-of-the art artificial intelligence to generate accurate, real-time tracking information for all roadway users and maps them onto the road geometry data in the I2V message.
Motivation
CAVs have important implications in terms of transportation system management, safety, and operations. Yet, this technology also raises concerns over non-connected road users, particularly in rural areas where the wireless roadside infrastructure to support I2V communication is lacking.
Problem
Building I2V infrastructure in rural areas at the desired standards requires substantial investment, which limits the availability of I2V communication to dense urban areas.
Solution
I2V communication technology comprises of smart traffic signs with unique visual identifiers and an on-board machine vision system.
How Does It Work?
When the machine vision recognizes a smart sign, it associates the pre-mapped route data with the the machine vision perception.
